Disasters don’t plan ahead, but if you join our team in observing National Preparedness Month, you can! Read on to learn how to keep your family safe and secure in the most scary circumstances.
Create a Plan
With disasters, just like with sports, the best offense is a good defense. Consider the specific needs that your family may require, and make a point to build an emergency plan of action tailor-made to cover them. For example, if you have certain dietary needs, keep those on-hand! And if you have school-aged children? Make sure they know what the plan is. And of course– assign specific meeting places, so your family knows where to go when.
Once your loved ones are all accounted for in your emergency plan, create an emergency kit to use within that plan. This should be a grab-and-go kit that includes water, food, medications, a first aid kit, flashlight, etc. And don’t forget contact information! Keep in mind that your phone’s “contact” app won’t be much help if you’re separated from your phone.
Learn Life Saving Skills
Before a disaster ever occurs, go ahead and practice basic home maintenance to try to prevent it. Make sure you know how to turn off the gas to your home and how to keep your home safe from cooking or heating/ electrical fires. Test your smoke alarms, and if possible, becoming CPR certified never hurt anyone!
Check Your Coverage
Don’t wait until the water’s rising to realize that you don’t have flood insurance. Review all of your insurance details to find out what you’re covered for– and what you’re not. This knowledge (and coverage) will help you and your family recover more quickly and more fully after disaster strikes.
